Something wasn't right. Bearpaw lifted his nose, opening his mouth to catch the scent. No, that couldn't be right. I was just here yesterday, there's no way one could've moved in so quickly... Furrowing his brow in confusion, the large apprentice kept walking, eager to find the source of the smell. In the back of his mind, he knew he should go back to camp and alert the others, but the possibility of danger seemed too remote for him to bother. Besides, it was the day of his final assessment, the day he would become a warrior. He wasn't about to go running back to camp just because of a smell. Anyway, I see no tracks or droppings, so I'm probably just overreacting to a stale smell.
Before he had even finished the thought, however, a dull roar sounded nearby. The apprentice jumped, his fur spiked with horror. And at that moment he knew that he hadn't imagined the smell. Badger! He spun on his heels, digging his paws into the ground, ready to sprint back to camp, but he had only taken a few steps when he barreled straight into a massive wall of stinking, coarse black fur. He looked up, his eyes glazed over in terror, and sprung backward, landing nimbly on his toes. He quickly scanned the area, frantically looking for a way out, but found none. Fine, he thought, I guess I'll have to fight my way out.
With a yowl, he launched himself toward the beast, balancing nimbly on his back paws and using his powerful front paws to batter at the badger's face, clawing clumps of fur from its massive white-striped head. Enraged by his pummeling, the beast emitted a spine-tingling roar and rushed at him, knocking him over and onto his back. It began to swipe at him with paws that were bigger than Bearpaw's whole head, opening a multiple shallow gashes in the apprentice's belly. With a his, Bearpaw scrambled out from underneath the badger and flung himself on the beast's back, clinging with his large front claws into the rough black fur, but unable to part the thick pelt enough to hook his claws in skin. He was thrown off the badger's back, and landed heavily on his side, sprawled in the dirt. He tried in vain to scramble to his paws, vaguely aware that blood was slowly trickling into his eyes. As the badger rounded on him, he began to pull himself toward a patch of brambles, his mind a bit foggy from the fall. As his vision began to blur, he was vaguely aware of a searing pain in his tail, as if someone had flayed open his spine and sent fire running through his veins. His last impression was of a large shadow leaping over him, yowling with unconcealed rage and fury, it's pale ginger fur fluffed up with terror.

Where was Bearpaw? Tornface pondered as he paced around the center of the camp, the apprentice promised to meet him there at moon high so they could start the hunting portion of his final assessment. The deputy flicked his tail back and forth in annoyance, Bearpaw was late, and it was not a good start to his test before he'd receive his right to be a warrior. Tornface scowled, his guess was that his apprentice got excited at the thought of moving up a rank that he started without him. He caught a trace of his apprentice's scent and followed it outside of camp, oh was he going to receive punishment when he finally tracked him down! This was displaying the behavior of an anxious kit, not a patient warrior!
However, the scent was faded away by the boggy and peaty ShadowClan territory, so Tornface used his one eye to scan the landscape. He fixed his gaze on the burnt sycamore in the distance, it was very possible his apprentice had traveled there - after all, he did know that they were starting with the hunting portion first. Tornface sprinted toward the landmark, his ears pricked to pick up the slightest noise. You just never knew what you'd run into on the ShadowClan territory, and it was good to be aware of your surroundings.
But Tornface was not prepared for what he found, and it was enough to make adrenaline course through his veins. His apprentice was curled up, barely conscious and bloody, near a patch of brambles with a badger hovering over him prepared to make a death blow. Alone Tornface was not powerful enough to take on the badger, but if he could make one, fatal strike while it was not looking he could save his apprentice as well as himself. He sprung forward, praying his poor depth perception wouldn't throw him off, and hooked his claws deep in the badger's pelt sending them both rolling. In one swift, quick movement he sank his fangs in the side of the badger's neck, piercing the jugular vein. It was over as quick as it happened.
Abandoning the badger's body Tornface quickly ran over to his apprentice. Panic spread through him, the young tom was barely clinging onto life. He quickly decided he'd run back to camp to get the medicine cat, it'd be much quicker than dragging the apprentice and possibly hurting him more. "Hang on, and don't slip away." It was not a request, it was a demand. He ran so fast to the ShadowClan camp, that he was left breathless by the time he was there. "Turtlepelt! I need your help, now, quick!" He yowled frantically when he got to the medicine den. Time was precious, and there was not enough of it.

The calico she-cat gingerly slid a leaf off of her claw, shaking her paws. It was so tedious, organizing herbs... But at the same time, she loved it. After all, they had to have everything all nice and neat! If only she could convince the elders of that when they dragged themselves in, complaining of whatever aches and pains they had... One had even tried to find the correct herb on his own, claiming he knew what to do! This, of course, resulted in many destroyed herbs and scattered leaves and berries...
Turtlepelt sighed, smoothing everything out patiently. Now, to go collect some more herbs and she'd be set- her ears twitched. She looked up, eyes growing wide at the sound of the strangled-sounding yowl. Her tail bushed out. Was it an attack or...?
Suddenly, Tornface burst into the den, the herbs she'd just carefully set up quivering in their piles. "What do you need? What happened?" she asked, her quiet voice calm. She needed to keep her head. She smelled blood on him, but he didn't appear injured. Blood meant that she'd need poppy seeds, cobwebs, marigold... She went ahead and began gathering the herbs in a quick, efficient manner, keeping an ear pricked for the tom's words.

The deputy caught his breath for a moment before explaining the situation, "Bring some supplies, we need to leave quickly! Bearpaw is on the brink of death, there was a bad badger attack. There's open wounds and lots of blood " Tornface informed the medicine cat. His nerves were on end, but he tried to remain thinking positively. After all, hadn't the same thing happened to him when he was an apprentice? The only difference was he was mauled by a fox, and it had costed him his eye. Tornface already knew it had costed his apprentice his tail, he shuddered at the memory of Bearpaw's exposed tail bone.
Once he had given the medicine cat sometime to collect supplies, he turned and fled, leading her to his wounded apprentice. Even though he was running as fast as possible, when every second counted, he felt as though he couldn't travel fast enough. Once he made it to the burnt sycamore he halted next to the bramble pile Bearpaw was laying down by. Adrenaline shot through him once more as glanced down at the body. Relief! He could see Bearpaw was still alive by the rise and fall of his chest as he breathed. Thank StarClan! "Hang on! Don't give up yet, I brought help." He meowed softly. Even though he had been a strict, even sometimes mean mentor, Tornface hated to admit he had developed a soft spot for the young tom.
Despite how nervous he felt, Tornface forced himself to sit down and remain calm and let Turtlepelt do her job. Looking at the mangled body of his apprentice he couldn't help but feel stab of pity for him. He knew what it was like to have a disfigurement or altered appearance, and the insecurities that came along with it.

Turtlepelt gulped slightly, but refused to let her facade fall. "Lead me to him," she ordered, picking up her bundle of herbs. There might not be enough... she thought grimly. She hadn't had time to collect more herbs... But these would have to do.
She ran after the deputy, her breaths coming quick and light through her nose. The leaves were suffocating her it seemed... But she didn't dare slow down or stop, simply going faster. Arriving, she almost dropped the herbs. She hurried to the young tom's side, almost thankful for the bitter tang of herbs on her tongue and in her lungs. The young cat was practically drenched with blood... And his tail...
Her ear flicked, and she looked up at Tornface. "Make sure the badger isn't around anymore," she barked in her quietly demanding voice. She returned to tending the apprentice, pressing a large wad of cobwebs to his tail, hoping to stop the bleeding. She pressed several marigold leaves into her mouth, chewing them with little regard for the bitterness, as she pushed with her paws on the wound. The cobwebs were quickly soaked through, and she replaced them with practiced ease. Since Bearpaw was unconscious, she couldn't give him the poppy seeds to ease his pain... She only hoped she wasn't too late.
After a moment, it seemed like the bleeding had subsided. Thank StarClan for spiders and their webs... She removed the blood soaked bandages, spitting the wad of herbs into the wound. She carefully smeared it with her paw, then covered it with several more layers of cobwebs before turning to tend to the less serious wounds in his stomach and head.

"I already killed the badger." Tornface growled, but not at his medicine cat, it was directed toward his hatred to the filthy creatures. The deputy felt helpless as he stared down at his unconscious apprentice, he had trained a few good warriors, and wanted to say Bearpaw was one of them, he did not want to lose the cat today. Tornface unsheathed his claws, and started scoring the surface of the frozen ground, in impatience and anger. Guilt was kicking, and in a way he blamed himself for his apprentice's accident. Wasn't he supposed to protect his apprentice just the same as how his mother protected him as a kit?
He felt a bit uneasy as he watched Turtlepelt remove the blood soaked webs, and tend to his wounds. "I'm never going to let him forget this!" He spat, lashing his tail, looking down on him with his only eye. "You'd think with having me for a mentor, he would have learned not to wander off and get himself into a situation like this!" Behavior like this was unusual for the deputy, never did he let his emotions get to him like he did now, but he couldn't help but to find the situation stressful.

Bright newleaf sun shone through the brambles of their den, creating a soft dappled pattern all along the mossy floor. A stunning golden she-cat snored contentedly nearby, her soft, round flank slowly rising and falling with her steady breathing. The large kit blinked open his eyes, his vision still a bit blurry as it adjusted to the world around him. Beside him, he could feel the constant, steady presence of his littermate, and he turned his head and looked at her for the first time. Her eyes were already open, and she seemed to be able to focus much easier than he was. She must've opened her eyes before me, he thought, but being competitive never even crossed his mind. She was quite a bit smaller than he was, but her eyes shone with determination and a thirst to prove herself. With a soft purr, the large tom kit pawed at her nose gently and licked her right between the eyes.
The vision grew hazy and his mind reeled, and he felt the sensation of falling down a long tunnel, his surroundings blurring past him in a jumble of colors and shapes. The next thing he knew, he was on fire. His entire body seemed to burn with the fever, and he moaned out loud, thrashing his paws weakly. He was vaguely aware of the presence of others, but his mind was too foggy to pick out the individuals. He thought he heard yowling, but then everything went quiet and he slipped out of consciousness again.
Foxkit wriggled underneath him as he pinned her, the two kits rolling back and forth in front of the nursery. Their mother chuckled as she watched them, her golden fur shining in the late greenleaf sun. Bearkit squeaked indignantly as his clever sister slipped out from underneath him and sprang nimbly backward, reaching out a tiny brown forepaw to bat gently at her brother's ears. With a tiny yowl of kit-like outrage, Bearpaw leapt forward, paws outstretched, but Foxkit easily dodged his attack, laughing good-naturedly as she landed gracefully on her toes.

Turtlepelt looked at Tornface in shock for a moment, before she nodded. "Alright-" Her voice cut off as a feeble paw brushed past her cheek. She gently soothed him as best she knew how, touching her nose to his cheek. She felt the heat of fever in his fur, and pulled back slightly. "We need to stabilize him a bit more, then move him to camp." Her tail flicked. "I don't have the materials needed to treat him adequately," she added softly, her voice almost mournful. She'd have to entrust someone to watch Bearpaw while she went out for more marigold after getting him to camp... He'd get an infection. And an infection in leafbare of all seasons was no good at all...

Tornface looked down at Bearpaw who was struggling for his life, and then back up to his medicine cat. If she couldn't save him, then no one could. "What do you mean you don't have the materials needed? Didn't I tell you what to expect when you got here?" He snapped, flicking his tail in annoyance. It may have seemed harsh to say, but everyone in the clan was already used to Tornface's attitude , the only ones he could shock with his behavior now were cat's from other clans, but they simply wrote it off as being a typical ShadowClanner in their eyes. "If you need I can run back and get something, if you tell me what I'm looking for." He offered, unsure of what he really should do or say in this situation.

At his outburst, she flattened her ears, her eyes narrowing. "It's leafbare. I don't have that many herbs to begin with," she mewed coldly. She turned back to Bearpaw, gently nudging him again. "He'll live, but there's a chance of infection." She looked back at the deputy. "I need him back at camp where it's safer and warmer so that I can go look for more marigold."

Tornface stared down at Bearpaw's ragged body, "How are we going to get him back to camp? He can't even walk, and he's much too big for one of us to pick up by the scruff." The deputy was starting to feel annoyed, he didn't like being in situations like this where there were problems he didn't know the answer to. He almost wanted to hiss at Bearpaw, wasn't he smart enough not to make the same mistakes his mentor did when he was an apprentice. He prodded his apprentice lightly in the side with his paw, "You better start waking up soon so we can take your sorry butt back to camp!" He snarled, this day definitely did not go as planned, it didn't look like Bearpaw would be having his warrior ceremony today.

Turtlepelt went silent, gently nudging the apprentice with her nose in a comforting way. She flicked the deputy with her tail, flashing him a warning glance. She may have been younger and less experienced than him, but that didn't give him the right to act this way! Bearpaw was looking like he'd survive, at the very least...
She looked up at him. "Did you send any patrols out today?" she asked calmly, turning back to Bearpaw to replace his cobwebs. "If you did, we can get one to help us. Four cats carrying an apprentice shouldn't be too difficult."
